Dear Urban Strategies Council Community,

Urban Strategies Council, which for three decades has played a significant role in helping catalyze substantive progress to build healthy communities in the Bay Area, is announcing a search for its next Chief Executive Officer. Junious Williams, CEO of the Urban Strategies Council for 18 years, has announced that he will be moving on to pursue new opportunities in his lifelong commitment to achieving equity and social justice. Mr. Williams will continue to lead the Council during this period of transition in order to support the board and staff in the search for a new CEO.

On behalf of the entire board and staff, we sincerely appreciate Junious’ commitment over these past two decades and thank him for his leadership. He leaves an enduring legacy of excellence and impact. His commitment, knowledge, and depth of expertise has built the Council into the pillar it is today.

Urban Strategies Council’s next CEO will lead one of the preeminent social justice organizations in the region, founded in 1987 by Angela Blackwell, with a mission of eliminating persistent poverty by building vibrant, healthy communities. Oakland and the wider Bay Area are at critical crossroads—witnessing an unprecedented level of economic growth—the Council can help ensure that regional prosperity is shared by low and moderate income populations in our community.

Urban Strategies Council focuses on research and data, cross-sector collaboration, and policy and systems reform strategies centered on equity. The Council’s partnerships and programs have strong momentum, including our work with boys and men of color, our income and asset development work, and our award-winning data projects.

The Council’s new CEO will serve as the principal strategist, thought leader, and vigorous advocate for low-income communities of color in Oakland and the greater region. The incoming CEO will also bring their experience, expertise, and know-how and we look forward to a dynamic approach to our ambitious programming and goals.
